Robotics Course
Rea Farms STEAM Academy After school Robotics Course: Build, Code, and Compete with classmates! *
In this hands-on afterschool program, students become real-world problem solvers as they explore robotics through the LEGO Spike Prime system. Designed for curious middle school minds, this course blends engineering, coding, and creativity into an exciting learning experience.
Students will learn how to design, build, and program their own robots while developing essential STEM skills. Throughout the course, they will explore:
Engineering & Motor Control
-
How motors work and how to control speed, direction, and precision
-
How to construct stable, efficient robot designs
-
Techniques for improving traction, balance, and pushing power
Coding Concepts
-
Block-based programming fundamentals
-
Loops, conditionals, variables, and sensor-based logic
-
How to write clean, organized code that makes robots smarter and more reliable
Troubleshooting & Iteration
-
How to diagnose mechanical and coding issues
-
Strategies for testing, refining, and improving robot performance
-
Learning that failure is part of the engineering process
Sensor Technology & Autonomous Navigation
Students will gain hands-on experience with key Spike Prime sensors:
-
Color Sensor – Line following, color detection, and environmental reactions
-
Touch Sensor – Triggering actions through physical contact
-
Gyro Sensor – Measuring rotation, turning accurately, and maintaining orientation
-
Ultrasonic Sensor – Detecting distance and avoiding obstacles
Using these tools, students will learn how to create robots that can navigate the world autonomously, making decisions based on sensor input—just like real robots used in industry.
Final Challenge: Build a Sumo Bot!
At the end of the program, students will apply everything they’ve learned—engineering, coding, sensors, strategy, and teamwork—to design and program their own Sumo Bot. These robots will enter a friendly Sumo Bot Tournament, where students compete to push opponents out of the ring using smart design and clever programming.
This course is perfect for students who love building, experimenting, and discovering how technology works. It’s a fun, empowering way to grow confidence in STEM while building something they can be proud of.
